Facts about Iceland
Iceland is located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Iceland is actually located on the Mid-Atlantic ridge, having it´s geologic border between North America testonic and the Europe testonic. You might say that Iceland is a geolgically young country, containing about 130 volcanoes and 13 major glaciers and hotsprings. To better understand the extent of glaciers in Iceland, it is nice to point out that if we could spread the glaciers evenly throughout Iceland, the ice sheet would be about 35 meters thick throughout the country. The glaciers hold as much water as if it rained every single day for 25 years. If the glaciers were to melt today, the sea level would rise by one cm all over the world. It can be said that Iceland is a land of opposites of fire and ice.
Iceland was founded more than 1,000 years ago during the Vikings age of exploration and settled by a mixed Norse and Celtic population. The first settler, Ingólfur Arnarson arrived to Iceland 874.
